Acne is an inflammation of the skin around the hair follicles and sebaceous glands.
Several factors play a role in the development of acne, which can clog the hair follicles. As a result, blackheads form. The clogged hair follicles contain bacteria and inflammation can occur. These inflammations can sometimes become severe. We call this acne conglobata. This form usually occurs in men.
Sometimes acne is caused by external factors. Think of the blockage of hair follicles by makeup and oily products. Medications and supplements can cause or aggravate acne: one example is vitamin B12.
Acne is not caused by poor hygiene or vitamin deficiencies. There is little evidence that a particular diet or taking supplements improves acne.
